6 Factors that Determine the Cost to Build a Patio in Towson, Ellicott City, and Severna Park

There are a variety of factors that determine the final cost to install a new patio in Towson, Ellicott City, and Severna Park. The basic 6 factors that contribute to the construction costs are size, slope, accessory features, access, steps, and demolition.

Size and Shape of Patio

Large patios take more material, more excavation, more time to build compared to small patios. Designs that include curves will cost more than rectangle and square patio installations due to material waste from cuts and the labor to make the necessary cuts.

Topography of the Construction Zone

It is most simple to build a patio on a flat surface. However, we find many backyards are not flat. A lot of times, land that looks relatively flat when covered with grass turns out to have much more slope than originally thought. Checking the actual slope with tools such as a transit will determine the exact change in elevation.

Minor slopes can be handled with some grading and more simple site work. More aggressive slopes will lead us to building a retaining wall so we can build a raised patio.

Accessory Features

The patio is only as nice as the features you include. The right features multiply how much you enjoy the patio and how often you use it. Valley Deck & Patio considers low voltage lighting, seat walls, and fire features to be essentials. You can also add a pavilion or outdoor kitchen to the design.

Access

A wide open backyard is our favorite location. When it is easy to move machines to the work area and there is room for staging materials, the project moves faster and costs to build are lower. Make no mistake, we can build in pretty much any space, it just impacts the costs. A backyard with tight access and no room to stage materials will take more effort to accomplish the same scope or work.

Steps

How will you gain access to the patio? If the exterior door height allows you to walk straight out to the patio we do not have to consider adding steps. If the height requires steps we will need to build a way for you to walk down and access the area.

Demolition

Is something in the way? Demolition costs will be added to construction costs. An old deck or patio needs to be removed before we build the new construction.
