Can I Resurface My Deck?

When a homeowner comes to us and requests we tear down an old deck and build one a new it is sometimes possible to resurface the existing deck. We have a (not so) fancy name for this…. Re-Decking.

What is Deck Resurfacing or Re-Decking

The process of re-decking is exchanging the existing decking boards from aged wood to a new low-maintenance composite material that is easier to care for and will outlast pressure treated wood.

What is the Process to Re-Deck?

The first step in determining if your existing deck is a candidate for re-decking is a professional evaluation. If the substructure (the base and frame) is in good shape, you may be able to save money and time by re-decking instead of tearing down your old deck and starting from scratch with a new one. To determine if your deck is a candidate for re-decking we will evaluate the quality and structural integrity of the original substructure and how it has weathered over time. We will also determine if any applicable building codes have changed since the deck was originally installed.

Once your existing deck is deemed a good candidate for resurfacing, we will then work with you to help you choose the decking material that best fits your needs and budget. In the process of resurfacing your deck your railings should be replaced to match.

Advantages of Composite Decking Materials

Here at Valley Deck & Patio we have an variety of composite decking materials. Composite materials are composed of elements that stabilize and are resistant to UV damage. These materials also have several advantages over most types of natural wood. Composite decking is much less likely to crack or chip and is impervious to insects such as termites. Composite decking will never need to be treated or stained. That means you focus on enjoying your backyard rather than maintaining it!
